This five-hour course bundle is specifically focused on middle school and high school ELA teachers as it works to develop a deep understanding of grading calibration and showcase the importance for teams to practice inter-rater reliability.  Learners directly apply their learning and newly acquired skills by scoring sample student work using a holistic rubric and then receiving expert feedback from a calibrated team.

After setting the foundation of grading calibration through definition and practice, the learner will move into specific ELA writing categories.  The learner will understand the nuances of each style and see the rubric differences.  They are then taken through a grading calibration experience where they read student work, score with a rubric, submit that score, and see how a calibrated team rated the writing.

A learner will move through the understanding of grading calibration and gain practical experience in scoring materials using holistic rubrics.  The course has three primary objectives that focus on what the learner will know, understand, and do:

    1. KNOW:  The learner will comprehend the value of grading calibration, see the differences between norms and calibration, and view inter-rater reliability through holistic rubrics.
    1. UNDERSTAND:  The learner will demonstrate how each writing style – literary analysis and research papers – demands nuanced rubric scoring, thus necessitating team grading calibration.
    1. DO:  The learner will apply this content through a course experience that offers direct feedback and materials preparing them to return to their schools to lead grading calibration discussions across content or grade level teams.

This course has been approved the the University of Mississippi Office of Professional Development and Lifelong Learning to receive 0.5 continuing education units (CEUs). Upon successful completion of the course, you may complete their form, including the $20 fee, and submit to receive their CEU.
